As a follow-up to my previous post, yes, it's true: Nairobi is dangerous.
Anyone with much money at all would be a fool to live in a house or an apartment complex that did not have a night guard, and you always _ always _ put bars on the windows and get a metal, padlocked gate to go over your door. It's not considered safe to walk outside at night, though we do drive.
Our apartment, modest by western standards, has several levels of security _ an electric fence atop a 10-foot cement wall around the perimeter, a front gate manned by two guards at night, a metal, padlocked gate at the entrance of our apartment block, a metal, padlocked gate at our door, and a wooden door behind it with two very sturdy locks. We feel reasonably safe but there are certain flaws which, in my own modest security paranoia, I won't mention. We are on the top floor, which makes us feel safe, but then there's always the possibility that burglars will drill a hole in the roof (it happens).
For what it's worth.
